Languages of New York - Fourth Annual Multilingual New York Book Fair Expo

The world is at home in New York. Even from its beginnings, the city was a place of encounter for a great diversity of languages and cultures. In 1643, less than forty years after the first Europeans arrived, it was reported that 18 different languages were spoken among its 500 inhabitants. Today the city is home for more than 130 languages and none of them sounds foreign here.
The Fourth Annual Multilingual New York Book Fair Expo celebrates this year the richness and diversity of the languages of New York. The academic and cultural program will present music, theatre, literary readings; and book signings showcasing authors who write their works in one of the eight most spoken languages in the City besides English. New York Book Fair Expo is proud to present a distinguished group of authors, some of them living in the States and others coming from Argentina, Colombia, India, Greece, Panama, and other corners of the world, all converging in the NY Melting Pot.

February 14, 1929) is a Jewish Holocaust survivor and author of several Holocaust related books of poetry and prose. She currently resides in the United States, where she is a frequent invited speaker at museums and schools around the country. Elly was born in Şimleu Silvaniei, Romania to Eugene and Irina Berkovits. In 1942, her father was inducted by the invading Hungarian forces into a forced labor camp, where he perished on the Russian front. Elly and her remaining family, her mother and younger brother Adalbert, were taken to Cehei ghetto 'the day after Pesach' in 1944 along with most other Jews in Sălaj County. Six weeks later, her family, along with thousands of other Jews were transported via cattle cars to Auschwitz concentration camp. She was separated from her mother and brother, and never saw either again. Elly credits her survival of the camp to 'miracles', noting that few others of her age group survived the ordeal. http://www.ellygross.com/ Wolfgan Barros: A native of the Caribbean region of Colombia, cradle of the cumbia and vallenato rhythms, percussionist/composer/arranger/producer Wolfgang Barros fell in love with the indigenous musical culture of his homeland at a very early age. He mastered the intricacies of Afro-Colombian drumming as a student of the legendary master of folkloric percussion named Paulino "Batata" Salgado. His talents led him to perform with the National Ballet of Colombia for a period of ten years, and as a result, he introduced Afro-Colombian drumming traditions to diverse audiences throughout the globe.During his career, Barros has played an integral role in many renowned Colombian acts, such as Los Aterciopelados, Luna Verde, Ligia de Granados, San Andrés, Magical Beat and Nico Yembe. In addition, he has performed with multiple international artists. He's currently enjoying the release of his debut production as a leader (Ecos) with his group K'LUBA (a collective of young, innovative Colombian musicians focused on preserving their folklore while incorporating new tendencies of rock, jazz and electronica to original compositions). http://www.myspace.com/klubarecords
